How do I tax my car?

You can tax your car online, over the telephone or at a Post Office.

You will need one of the following documents to tax your vehicle:

  • V11 Reminder Letter
  • V5C registration document
  • The new keeper slip if you've just bought the vehicle

When is my vehicle tax due?

It can sometimes take up to 5 days for the tax expiry date to be updated after you tax a vehicle.

Why can't I find my vehicle?

Can I drive my vehicle if it is untaxed?

It is illegal to drive an untaxed vehicle unless you are driving to a pre-booked MOT test. You must tax your vehicle using the DVLA online service, even if it is free to tax.

How do I report an untaxed vehicle?

You can report an untaxed vehicle to the DVLA. You should check if the vehicle is taxed using the free online car tax check service first. You will need the registration number, make, model, colour and location of a vehicle to report it to the DVLA.

Is my vehicle exempt from tax?

Vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1979 are exempt from vehicle tax. Additional exemptions apply to some electric and disabled passenger vehicles. A full list of vehicles exempt from vehicle tax is available from the DVLA.

You can tax a vehicle online using the DVLA service.

You'll need one of the following reference numbers to pay your road tax online:

  • 16 digit reference number from your V11 reminder
  • V5C document reference number
  • V5C/2 new keeper supplement document reference number

To keep your vehicle on the road in the UK, it needs to be be taxed.

You could be fined up to £1,000 if you're caught driving an untaxed vehicle.

If your vehicle is off the road, you will need to register a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) with the DVLA to avoid paying vehicle tax.

After you make a SORN, you won't need to pay road tax for the duration of the notification. You won't be able to use your vehicle on the road during this time.

You will need one of the following reference numbers to pay road tax or make a SORN online:

  • 16 digit reference number from your V11 reminder
  • V5C document reference number
  • V5C/2 new keeper supplement document reference number

You'll get a refund for any tax still on your vehicle, but only for full months. Refunds for partial months are not given.
